In my personal opinion, the most important role in a dental practice is that of the Dental Assistant. They are responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of the practice, and their job is critical to its success. They have the power to improve practice productivity and profitability by supporting the dentist, hygienists, and administrative staff. Their interaction with patients is also vital, whether it involves educating them, easing their anxieties, building rapport, or providing empathetic and gentle care. Without them, a good practice may break down and suffer.
There is a growing concern that the career of Dental Assistant is becoming extinct. The reason is that very few Dental Assistants receive benefits such as health packages, an opportunity to participate in 401k's, and have Paid Time Off (PTO) to include sick and vacation days or maternity leave to start a family. There appears to be minimal investment in continuing education for Assistants, which would allow them to increase their knowledge and pay scale.
It is possible that if dental students were taught about business ownership during their dental school education, the current situation could have been prevented. After graduation, dentists possess an abundance of clinical knowledge but they may lack the expertise required to grow and maintain their practice by investing in their employees. There are many management courses available for dentists to invest in, but few focus on the owner-dentist/employee dynamic to help the practice grow.
During my time working for a dentist in the past, one particular dentist stood out to me. She encouraged me to pursue further education in dentistry. Her motivation inspired me to invest in myself and continue learning. After my interaction with her, I became capable of working in any dental practice, in any capacity. I firmly believe that knowledge is a valuable asset that benefits not only a dental practice but also an individual's confidence, awareness, and creativity. By continuously expanding our knowledge, we open ourselves up to new and exciting opportunities that help us live our best lives
